Activities on Wupper 10

The Koln-Dortmund InterCity Express is about to cross Koln's famous six-track bridge, the Hohenzollernbrucke.

Wupper Express 10 has been released on time on 8th January 2006.

Wupper Express 10 can be downloaded from The-Train.de or Kim-Trains (the latter may be easier and a bit quicker). The files are:

  • Wupper Express 10 route: wuppex10.zip (65Mb, 08-Jan-06)
  • Rolling stock and activities: we10act1.zip (15Mb, 08-Jan-06)

As of 24-Jan-2006, an update was made available to patch the track database to bring WE10 to version 10.1. This update is contained in archive file we10up101.zip (5.3Mb, 24-Jan-06) and can be downloaded from Graphics15, TBXTools or The-Train.de. Because the track database is changed with this update, all Graphics15 activities are changed and new ones are installed in their place when you run the self-installer. Note, unless you're an activity writer, delete all files from Wupper Express 10's Activities, Paths, Services, and Traffic folders. Activity writers should read how webTrainSim has made a manual installation of the update and the steps he's about to take to get back to activity creation.

Both the route and activity/rolling stock pack are downloaded and the route is installed. webDotTrainSim has to get on with checking his wDTS paths from WE9 and creating new ones where needed so hasn't time to indulge himself in the WE10 activities from the Graphics15 team.

webDotTrainSim downloaded from Kim-trains and the readme is in German but installation is as for WE9:

  • make sure the six default routes are available (i.e., if you use Train Store, unstore them)
  • extract wuppex10.exe from the zip file into the Routes folder and run the program (check that the installer is pointing to the correct folder in which WE10 will be placed - it will be ok however)
  • go to the WupperExpress10 folder, find Installme.bat and double-click it to start the copying process of files from the six default routes (if you use MS Antispyware - you should be if not - a warning will pop up about running a BAT file - click Allow. Sometimes you can be a bit slow at responding, so double-click the Installme.bat again and be prepared this time to Allow)
  • when the copying process finishes, Wupper Express 10 is installed.
  • even though you haven't installed the rolling stock/activity pack as yet, paths are in the route so you can start MSTS, wait for the buffer generation process, and do some exploring.

NOTE: if you have rolling stock from WE8 and/or WE9, and you've made changes to ENG and WAG files (you might have done some of the tune-ups recommended by yours truly), then run the activity/rolling stock installer so everything is unpacked to a temp folder.

Activities

webTrainSim will be creating a number of activities which will be organised according to the services offered by VRR as listed below under RE, RB and S-bahn services. He'll be using the same rolling stock as in his Wupper Express 9 activities - the list is further down this page. The first list summarises activities that are either ready for download or he's testing/creating (note all these activities are for Wupper Express 10.1):

Maps and timetables

The following provide maps and timetables encompassing Wuppertal:

The following pages give more details:

Trains and services

Trains

  • InterCity and EuroCity (IC/EC): The IC trains link major centers throughout Germany at speeds of up to 200 km/h. Trains generally run at hourly intervals.
  • InterRegioExpress (IRE): The InterRegioExpress connects cities and offers travelling in comfortable modern trains. It leaves at regular intervals and links local to long-distance trains.
  • RegionalBahn (RB): The RegionalBahn offers basic service from all local stations. It provides the connection between the regions and the city centres. It also gives connections to the RegionalExpress.
  • StadtExpress (SE): The StadtExpress offers quick direct connections to city centres. Outside of the S-Bahn network it stops at all stations, within the S-Bahn network it only stops at selected stations.
  • S-Bahn: The S-Bahn runs frequently and is the basic means of travelling within cities and high density areas.

Each of the following timetables can be read (as a PDF document and saved if you wish), from the VRR Rhine-Ruhr Timetables page.

Rolling stock

The rolling stock listed below, used in Wupper 9 activities, is available from the TheTrain.de library. There's no need to download all this rolling stock in one session - download one of webTrainSim's activities (packed with Route Riter) and refer to the rolling stock list in the activity's zip file.

An excellent reference for MSTS German Railways rolling stock is Philip Chesters' Trainsimming series for German Railways (3 volumes) available from Train-sim.com and TheTrain.de.

In most cases to install, all that's required is to extract the files from the zip into the folder specified by the author. However, in cases where the folder name has spaces, webTrainSim follows his rule of not using folder names with spaces and substitutes the underscore character.

Another job to do is to check the ENGine or WAGon files. Although not mentioned on the Small Fixes 16 & 17 pages, webTrainSim edits each ENGine file to check:

  • no zero values in the Coupling section
  • MaxBrakeForce set to 10% of mass so an 80 tonne loco has 80kN
  • MaxPower and MaxForce are reasonable
  • checks the Sound and CabView lines and the folder to see if they exist (also a check with ConBuilder reveals any sound and/or cab problems).
  • if there are major changes required, check the Small Fixes 16 & Small Fixes 17 pages - if the problem is not solved there, please let me know.

In case webTrainSim installs some rolling stock in a folder different than suggested by the author, check the rolling stock list included in each activity's zip file (produced by Route Riter). webTrainSim often has such changes in a Small Fixes page but he probably won't remember all changes he makes.

Unless otherwise indicated, the following should be available from TheTrain.de.
